Columbia Audio and Music Professor Named Finalist for American Prize in Composition

Philip Seward received recognition for the opera “A House Divided,” which he composed with the support of a ŷɫƬ Faculty Development Grant.

Philip Seward, a professor in the School of Audio and Music, has been selected as a finalist for the American Prize Thomas Putsché Award in Composition. Winners will be announced in the coming weeks.  

The in the Performing Arts is the nation's most comprehensive series of contests in the performing arts. The American Prize is unique in scope and structure, designed to recognize and reward the best performing artists, directors, ensembles, and composers in the United States. 

Seward is a finalist in the professional division of the American Prize Thomas Putsché Award in Composition, which celebrates work from opera, theatre, film, and dance. He is being recognized for “,” a modern opera reflecting the 21st-century American political divide.  The work was supported in part by a ŷɫƬ Faculty Development Grant.
